Awesome School in Chennai

Principal of the school, such a sweetheart!

Immaculate drawing of a microscope in his lab notebook.

Bio lab preparing slides of their cheek cells.

Padma Seshadri Bala Bahram Senior Secondary High School.  Another inspiring principal doing great things in India.  She started this school many years back in her home with 13 students.  They had most of their lessons under trees and now the school has, as they say, a “strength” of 8,000 students.  She got her PhD at age 70 (unheard of in India, and probably the U.S. too) and now she’s 83.  She’s a sweet-looking brilliant woman.  When we visited labs, the students were actually doing inquiry!!  The teacher said she never tells them what they will find.  They must do the experiment and figure out what the problem is and hypothesize how to solve it.  It was cool and the students were really into it.  In the physics lab, they had to observe the weight of an object when dipped in distilled water vs. salt water.  If there is a difference, they have to figure out why there is a difference.  Super cool.

The rest of the day was spent shopping at a nearby mall.  Most of us are out of shampoo, laundry detergent and deodorant.  I’ve been washing my essentials in the sink every night because a load of laundry at the hotel can cost $75.
